Newport News, a Hampton Roads city on the Virginia Peninsula, is making strides in improving its current residential recycling program by making it simpler for residents to recycle by not requiring them to “sort” items as either paper, plastic or glass. This current system used by Newport News Recycling Program does have one disadvantage though;  items are thrown into these familiar blue bins that are NOT recyclable. This does lead to contamination and can cause these waste disposal and recycling facilities to experience problems due to the added task of additional sorting of these non-recyclable items.
